Street Scene, Puerto Vallarta, Mexico

Pastel, 1985
Drawn while surrounded by curious children while stranded in paradise for several days waiting for the next boat to Cabo San Lucas.
This was a very low budget trip whose itinerary was as follows:
Flight from NY to Houston. Greyhound bus to Brownsville TX where I found a $14 hotel two blocks from the border.
Overnight bus from Matamoros to Mexico City. Several days in the capital, with visit to Teotihuacan.
By bus to Iguala with Raul, young Mexican who befriended me as I sketched in the Zocalo; invited me to his hometown. House had dirt floors and family was wonderfully welcoming. Traveled by bus to Acapulco with Raul; stayed at a $4 hotel near La Quebrada where we recognized one of the cliff divers as someone who had eaten supper in the same cafe with us.
Later by bus back to Mexico City, then a $22 flight to Puerto Vallarta, where I stayed three nights, rented a moped one day and drove down the coast a ways and back. Pastel of the big Pacific rock outcroppings done during this ride unfortunately now lost.
Overnight boat to Cabo San Lucas ($16 for cabin shared with a stranger from Toronto); followed by 24-hour bus ride up the Baja (all by same bleery-eyed driver) to Tijuana. Met Swiss guy Francois on bus who later visited me several times in New York. Greyhound from San Diego to LA, hung out with my friend Billy for several days before flying back to New York. Trip was about 23 days.
